Part 2 –
The Jobactive Forum reporting on the Australian Government Labour Market tells us what the next 5 years will hold for Job Seekers:
Labour Market: Keeping up-to-date with local market conditions will be vital.
- Unemployment rate projected to remain around 6%
- Continual shift towards the services sector and higher skilled jobs
- Regional variation
Job seekers need to keep up with what the Government are offering in regional markets.
As one of the Government’s initiatives, they announced on 18th June (see further details: Australian Government Seasonal Workers Programme) that they will be “consulting with industry on identifying a list of low-skilled, seasonal occupations in the agricultural industry, and these will be published on the Seasonal Worker Programme website”.
Further opportunities for job seekers are being created by the Government but you need to keep up with what they are doing to make the most of job opportunities if you really want to get back in the workforce and get an interview.
Employers: Establishing strong relationships with employers will be vital.
- Will be more selective
- Will place a premium on experience
- Will not compromise on soft skills
Caseloads: Training and work experience for job seekers will be vital.
- More young people with higher education
- More young indigenous job seekers
- More disadvantaged and long-term unemployed seekers
- More older job seekers transitioning out of declining industries
In May 2015 it was announced that “a key element of the Government Budget for 2015-2016 is a Growing Jobs and Small Business package. The package focuses on helping employers to create new jobs and assisting Australia’s unemployed, particularly young people, to access the skills and opportunities they need to become job-ready.”
This package includes a number of new employment measures that focus on making job seekers more employable, reducing the costs of taking on new staff, and ensuring job seekers are meeting their obligations and actively looking for work.
